Gaps: the Strategy behind a Speedy Coupling of Card Shuffling
نویسنده
چکیده
Using methods of coupling we analyze two models of card shuffling, the random transposition and the random-to-random process, to find minimal coupling times. Disregarding the rank and suit on the standard playing cards we are familiar with, we focus only on the color; specifically, we consider decks where half the cards are white and half are black. We define the total gaps on a pair of decks, which proves to be a valuable distance and technique to a quick coupling. Using the total gaps and taking advantage of the color scheme of the decks, we bound the mixing time of the random-to-random shuffle to O(n logn). Along the way, we prove useful properties unique to a deck with only two colors.

Exploring the Geometric Model of Riffle Shuffling
Card shuffling is an interesting topic to explore because of its complexity. Initially, card shuffling seems simple because it is ubitquitous. The majority of people know how to shuffle a deck of cards but few consider the math behind it. However, when it comes to analyzing the elements of card shuffling, it incorporates linear algebra, group theory, probability theory, and Markov Chains. When ...

The present study was an attempt to compare the effect of three VLSs, namely word-part strategy, word-card strategy and context-clue strategy on immediate and delayed English vocabulary retention of Iranian third grade high school students. To this end, 90 students, studying at three high schools in Tabriz, in three intact groups, were considered as the participants of the study. In order to en...

The researchers who proposed balanced scorecard model presented the concept of strategy map in this model for converting intangible assets to the quantifiable benefits. Strategy map tries to represent the organization’s strategy in the framework of cause and effect relationships and demonstrate how the organization’s strategy can be transformed into measurable objectives and certain operations ...
متن کاملMarkov Chains , Eigenvalues , and Coupling ( December
This is an expository paper which presents certain basic ideas related to nonasymptotic rates of convergence for Markov chains. In particular, we describe eigenvalue analysis, random walks on groups, coupling, and minorization conditions. Connections are made to modern areas of research, including analysis of card shuffling and analysis of stochastic algorithms used in statistics and computer s...
متن کاملMixing times of Lozenge Tiling and Card Shuffling Markov Chains
We show how to combine Fourier analysis with coupling arguments to bound the mixing times of a variety of Markov chains. The mixing time is the number of steps a Markov chain takes to approach its equilibrium distribution. One application is to a class of Markov chains introduced by Luby, Randall, and Sinclair to generate random tilings of regions by lozenges. For an l×l region we bound the mix...
